With the Patriots needing a win in the NFC title game, the Broncos and Steelers were forced to play in an overtime game at the Superdome on Saturday night, which gave them the chance to make their first postseason appearance since the 1999 season.
The Patriots had been eliminated in the divisional round after the loss to the Colts in Indianapolis.
The Steelers have lost four consecutive games, including two to the Browns and a 35-31 home loss to Kansas City.
Pittsburgh was eliminated in Week 4, then beat the Colts on Sunday in Indianapolis and then lost in the wild card round to the Ravens.
The Broncos, meanwhile, had won seven of their previous eight games and are currently in fourth place in the AFC West, three games ahead of the Raiders and four behind the Titans.
The Broncos, however, are currently 4-7 on the road and 3-7 in their past seven games.
The Pittsburgh win was the Broncos’ second win in three days, and the first time since Sunday’s home loss that they have had a win against the Steelers.
The Patriots have won two straight at home, including a 24-17 victory over the Titans in Week 3.
The last time the Steelers beat the Broncos was in 1999.
The win in Pittsburgh was the Steelers first win over the Patriots since Week 2 of the 1999 playoffs.
